My Students
My third grade music students are beyond excited to start learning how to play the recorder. I want to keep that excitement going strong by providing them with fun and interesting music that they will be motivated to play.
I teach Pre-K through 3rd grade music in a small Title I school in New Jersey.
My students arrive at music class each week ready to learn, explore, and be creative. Third grade is an exciting year in music because students get to learn recorder, however once students understand the hard work and discipline that it takes to progress, they can sometimes get discouraged. I want to help my students feel successful from the very beginning.
My Project
I have selected recorder sheet music that will help students stay motivated as they learn. The beginning music takes just two notes and sets them over exciting full band and orchestra recorded accompaniments. This makes playing so much more fun for the students, and keeps them enthusiastic about playing. The music I have selected gets progressively more difficult, so as students improve, they still have access to these fun recordings and music.
I have also requested a "Recorder Dude," which is a large model of a recorder. Recorder Dude has movable fingers, which helps my visual learners see how their fingers should be properly placed on their instrument when playing different notes.
These materials will have a lasting impact on my students, as capturing and maintaining an enthusiasm for playing instruments can lead them to go on and continue with music in the upper grades and beyond.
