My Project
I pride myself on maintaining a rather thorough, contemporary and busy classroom library.
In my classroom library I try to stock titles that will interest the students, get them reading, encourage further reading and instill in them a lifelong love of literacy.
It's no secret that the average modern teenager loves horror (in all facets - video games, films, literature...).
Given that a new Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN is now streaming (and getting millions of views!), my students have all expressed an interest in reading the source graphic novels.
Essentially, my goal in seeking this graphic novel (and novels by Ms. Downing Hahn, which have been specifically requested from me by my students) is to get students engaged in reading. Anything that gets their nose in a book (rather than their gaze directed at a smart phone!) is a victory for literacy. Thankfully, my students go against the grain and do indeed have their noses in books most of the time, rather than pointed at a digital portal.
Let’s face it: as a whole urban public school children are overlooked, dismissed and underestimated.
I tell my students that each one of them is a potential genius; they just have to find and figure out how to access that inner genius. By stocking my classroom library with interesting, substantial and resonate volumes like SANDMAN and Mary Downing Hahn, I think I can help them access those organic interior geniuses.
