Help me give my students a class set of the selected books which are not already available through our school district that will catch the attention of my reluctant readers .
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a unique group of students who require a lot of special attention here at our district's continuation high school. Our students come from many different backgrounds. Some students come to CVA seeking a more personal one-on-one experience in a smaller setting as a result of being swallowed up in class sizes at other high schools soaring into the 40s and 50s. Some students come to CVA after failing a number of classes in a traditional setting and are in need of a different approach. Other students come to CVA as a result of an extended interruption in their education. Even though their cases are very different, they all come here because we specialize in small classes designed to meet students at their level so they can be successful.
Teaching English at a continuation high school certainly has its challenges; however, it is always very rewarding when we our students finally realizing they CAN actually do this!
After years of struggling, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing our students achieve something they felt was previously unattainable.
Here, students are able to realize their full potential, find their path, and create a future they can be proud of.
My Project
At our continuation high school, reading full length novels can often be quite challenging for my reluctant readers. Therefore, as their teacher, I need to think outside of the box and find titles that I know they'll want to read. In class, students will have open access to these "anchor texts" which will help them interact with the unit theme and think critically about how the characters in the various novels deal with the specific implications of that theme. To determine which books would be most engaging, I had my students respond to a survey in which they reviewed a synopsis of a series of texts and selected three they were most interested in reading. The featured texts for this project came from the results of this survey.
When I can get the students to "buy in" to a novel that will interest them, the results are always outstanding!
Following reading these texts, I have my students hold their own "book club" reading circles in which they discuss what they've read. If they're reading a text they can connect with, their discussion are always much deeper and far more interesting. I see higher levels of student engagement and, ultimately, deeper critical thinking which helps them meet their state standard for graduation.
