I teach 26 enthusiastic Kindergarten students. It is the first classroom experience for many of my students. My students are at an age where art, movement, and dramatic play are the most meaningful and exciting times of the day. I use these times to reinforce many concepts each day. My students come from many different cultural backgrounds. Some of my students are from low-income families who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, some have special needs and have an Individualized Education Plan, and others are second language learners. This diverse group of learners need hands on experiences to express learning through fine motor development, personal development, and imagination.
My Project
My students will build phonics skills and master consonant-vowel-vowel words in a hands-on, tactile way. They will be able to practice these skills in the context of individual words and simple sentences. These materials are developmentally appropriate because the sentence cards have a textured dot for each phoneme in the focus words, plus arrows to help kids blend the sounds together.
My students will read a sentence, then find the corresponding picture card to make a match.
There are textured sentence cards, picture cards, storage pockets, and answer cards so for the students to continue their learning.
The students will develop many phonics skills. These skills include isolating and pronouncing initial, medial vowel and final sounds in words. The students will be given opportunities to orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds, decode regularly spelled one-syllable words, and read high-frequency words by sight.
