Let’s Read the Pieces Together!

Help me give my students scaffolded reading activities that allow them to have fun and piece together phonics in another way than a full book or text. As English Language Learners, this shows them reading isn’t scary!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love that my students see school as a safe space, which is why I have a passion to help create that for them. They come to school no matter what. They’re present. They don’t give up. Even though they may have extended learning needs, they are learning to advocate for themselves and ask questions to help them master what they may not have otherwise!

They are willing to use their resources, which is why visuals and hands-on manipulatives allow their learning styles to be met daily.

Some of my kiddos come without the ability to purchase supplies, so being able to provide extended learning materials keeps things fun, different, and even new in the best way possible. My students simply need a comfortable and engaging space to learn; these visual materials make that happen. They also need to know they’re capable, so word and language practice at their level let them say “I can” afresh each day.

My Project

My junior high students have had to learn 2 phonics systems- English and Spanish. Through this project, scaffolded reading activities will allow them to have fun and piece together phonics in another way than just a full book or text. As English Language Learners, this shows them reading isn’t scary!

Breaking sounds down into pieces brings the same thrill of a puzzle and the same joy of seeing the completed section of a puzzle as their reading becomes more fluent.

They won’t necessarily have to look at a high level text, rather they can use their hands and piece sounds together with a visual connection in their brain that will stick into their continued practice and fuller reading mastery. This in turn builds their health and wellness by boosting confidence and allowing them to get more excited about their reading ability daily!
