it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm teaching high school seniors for the first time, and they are a fantastic bunch. In the short time, I've known them, I am incredibly impressed by the drive to learn that many of them have shown me. It is my goal to provide a more rigorous classroom environment with a wider variety of texts.
My Project
We will use this in-class text to examine one of the most controversial and inspiring figures of the 20th century, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, or as he is more commonly known, Malcolm X. His story is a real-life hero's journey, filled with drama, defeats, mentors, and transformations.
As students read, they will see Malcolm for who he is, not who others claim he is.
For some, he is a villain; for others, he is a hero. But like all of us, he is a human being with all the complexities that go along with that. His steadfastness and intellectual rigor stand like a boulder in a stream, fighting against a world that wanted to destroy him.
Students deserve to see this piece of non-fiction in all its splendor and be allowed to make up their own minds about who Malcolm X was and what he truly represents.
