Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Reading to three classes. My students love to explore and are very curious, but unfortunately, many of them are far below the second-grade reading level. And because this year will begin remotely, my students will need as much help as I can give them. My students' abilities range widely, but I want to be able to provide an inclusive environment that adapts to each student's needs (even when we meet remotely).

My school is located in the inner city.

There are about 900 students in grade PreK-5. Most of my students live in low-income households. Many are starting out the year below grade level, and we will be working on ways to improve their reading skills and comprehension. Many of my students have been stuck at home for the past five months, and they yearn for interaction. They will have to find new ways to learn and concentrate on their work independently. However, they are all eager and excited to learn, and I want to do everything I can to encourage that!

My Project

My students need encouragement to feel a part of their class community. The books about kindness will help them explore their uniqueness and to understand relationships and how they affect each of them.

My students will be able to read these books during their independent reading time so they develop a love of learning.

Of course, they will also get a much-needed break from the computer while reading as well! Many of my students struggle with reading, so they will use the letter tiles in small group lessons with me to practice building words and become more familiar with letter and their sounds. I am excited to help my students with these materials from afar!
