"How are the ladybugs doing?" "Oh wow, the butterflies' wings are opening!"
When I hear this excitement from my elementary and middle school students in our library, I know I can help them become researchers and readers.
When they are curious about the miracle about nature unfolding right before their eyes, they are willing to open a book and use critical thinking skills to learn how to care for the beautiful creatures they feel responsible for in their libraries.
We will have several nature stations in our library: ladybug hatching (did you know that they begin as worms?!), caterpillar to butterfly stations, and a terrarium full of snails. Students like to have something they can touch, and slimy snails fill them with delight -- and the children can't hurt them because they hold them by their shells. So we have a mixture of different creatures, ones that are delicate and fragile and ones that are more sturdy. We will study and love all of these animals and transform our curiosity into reading.
Not all children grow up with the opportunities to fall in love with reading at home, and some kids think they don't like books. I fill our library with animals and plants they want to visit and care for so they become addicted to the library space -- and soon find a book they want to take home!
