Help me give my students art supplies to put the A in STEAM, adding to our existing STEM program, which encompasses robotics, coding, photography and 3D printing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Let's put the A in STEAM! Expanding our STEM offerings which include coding, robotics, 3D printing, and photography, our school would like to enhance our STEM courses with the arts, turning the program into a full STEAM program. Empowering students through art engages students in creative self-expression, providing an opportunity for students to experience and process emotions while boosting emotional intelligence. Art education fosters collaboration and broadens cultural and historical understanding and appreciation.
Art boosts problem solving skills, reduces anxiety, and provides an arena for devising original ideas, encouraging ‘outside-of-the-box thinking.
For some students, adding the art program will rouse excitement and provide a place to utilize their natural skills, and for others, this program will plant a small seed to grow into a love of art.
Currently, students complete their required art coursework on the computer in the form of art appreciation only. Our students do not have the creative outlet of a hands-on art course where they can create sketch drawings, shape clay, or paint, experiencing the patience and focus it takes, while acquiring the benefits of building coordination and brain development. They will have exposure to a variety of art supplies, something that is often inaccessible to our students because putting food on the table is all that can be afforded for most of our students.
Studies show that while building confidence, empathy, and inclusion, art education also improves overall school engagement.
