My Students

Do you remember what it was like after a long day of learning to finally have time to play? My students get center time at the end of each day, where they are able choose what center they would look to play in. We just began the school year but they already enjoy this time of day immensely! My students come from an area that was highly impacted by hurricane Sandy. Most of my students were without heat, water, power and food for almost a week. Some are still without heat. My classroom is in desperately need of supplies for a successful school year.

I am an elementary school kindergarten teacher in a high needs school in New York.

This year is my second year as an educator at my school. I teach approximately 16 kindergarten students in a general education classroom. My classroom is in desperate need new dramatic play furniture that can be used during center time when small groups of students play in various centers to help them grow and learn through play.

My Project

Play permits a child to fit the reality of the world into their own interests and knowledge. Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of play have greater language skills than non-players, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination, and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean. They are less aggressive and show more self-control and higher levels of thinking. I have requested a new kitchen set in the dramatic play area because the one we have is breaking and is dangerous for them to play with.

My project is so important to me because kindergarten education has become heavily focused on teaching literacy and other academic skills, and play is getting pushed aside.

Your donations will help foster a child's love of playing and sharing ideas with new friends. These materials will be used year after year and touch so many children's lives. Please help and encourage children to learn through play!
