Help me give my students early education in self-esteem, building relationships and social-emotional skills virtually by using board books and match up cards as props.
Imagine being a preschooler and going to school for the first time virtually instead of having the customary hands-on, in-person experience. My students are curious, willing to learn, explore, and eager to learn anything and everything. They come to preschool to learn skills and practice life skills.
My Project
I have preschoolers in an inclusion class who are attending an urban public school virtually. Between social distancing and no in-person school, these students have not interacted with one another except through computers. One of the main objectives of participating in our inclusive preschool program is to acquire and practice social/emotional skills such as self-regulation, taking turns, sharing, respecting others, learning self-esteem, and empathy.
Teaching social-emotional and self-esteem skills virtually can be challenging but it is doable given time and resources.
The books and match-up cards will be shared virtually as prompts and examples. The preschoolers will practice/discuss the much-needed skills in anticipation of the day when they have the opportunity to interact with their new friends in person.
