Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students live in a culturally diverse community, and it is identified as high poverty. The students in our classroom are aged 3-5 and identified as special needs. We service a variety of children with disabilities; including Autism, Down's Syndrome, Physically Impaired, Health Impaired and Speech & Language Impairment. They attend school 4 days a week, 3 hours a day. All of the children in the class have Individualized Education Programs, which means that we focus on a range of needs. In addition to academics and self-help skills, I believe we are preparing these young children to be good citizens. I take great pride in teaching them how to learn, how to be a good friend and how to make the most of their individual potential.
My Project
The rugs, I have chosen, will offer a safe and colorful foundation for my students to utilize the dramatic play area. At this time, the dramatic play area is on standard school tile that is hard.
Some of my students have physical disabilities, and it is challenging to come up with ways for them to safely play alongside their peers during free choice.
As a teacher, I am concerned with safety first, and I would love to be able to move a child out of a wheelchair and onto a safe play rug. I believe it will foster independence and confidence in all of the student's play skills.
Dramatic play is essential to learn life-long play and social skills. If I am able to have confidence in their space, I believe I will be able to facilitate socially appropriate and important play. Remember, a young child's work IS play!
