it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our music program currently comprises of concert band, string orchestra, and drumline. Coming this fall, I would like to establish and create a lunchtime jazz band for students who are interested in learning how to perform jazz. Jazz represents a different side to our traditional music program and brings underrepresented voices to our curriculum. The popular music we listen to today all have roots in jazz; in turn, our students will see their musical tastes represented as they learn how to play jazz.
The materials in this project - jazz band method books - are a resource that students will use during rehearsal to help learn how to play jazz with stylistic accuracy.
These books have exercises on articulation, rhythm (such as learning how to swing), and jazz band arrangements that can be performed at our concerts.
I am excited to bring this opportunity to my students, as I believe that they will be motivated to learn music that more closely relates and represents their musical culture and being.
