Students learn best when they are able to move and exert their energy. Our school district just adopted a policy making daily recess mandatory. So my students have the opportunity to go out to our play area for 20 minutes daily.
However, once out at the play area, they have no equipment to play with.
My students are very innovative. They've learned how to play hopscotch with rocks they find in the grass area. They have improvised games of soccer, without an actual ball. My kids love to play tag: freeze tag, hug tag, shadow tag, just about any kind of tag you can imagine, they've played it!
My Project
My students don't let their lack of equipment stop them from playing and getting exercise, but they would love to have some additional fun with jump ropes and dodge balls. Recess is a fun time for students to learn how to interact socially and get out the excitement of the day. We need these materials so when we come back into class, my students are focused on the task at hand and ready to learn.
Studies have shown that having physical activities at recess leads to better behavior, better academic performance, increased social skills and improved overall health.
Why wouldn't we want these wonderful benefits for every child in school?
