Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Friendships, Greek gods, insects, immigrants, and activists, these are a few of the topics that my second graders and I will investigate this year. I am excited to guide them through these explorations and participate in their growth as readers, writers, artists, storytellers, and individuals.
Our goal as a bilingual second grade community is to foster our students' development linguistically, academically, culturally, socially, and emotionally.
We want our learning environment to be a supportive, collaborative, and engaging space, where students can develop their individual voices and have the confidence to share their thoughts and ideas.
As a teacher, I constantly grow and learn with my students, as together we explore new worlds, new skills, and new relationships. This wondrous process can occur anywhere and anytime, but with the necessary supports, it can be more fluid and constant, laying the foundations for lifelong engagement in learning and discovery.
My Project
Thanks to the generosity of donors, friends, and the occasional (book) splurge, our classroom library is growing. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing students clamoring for books and excitedly opening a new chapter book. Unfortunately, with growth has come chaos!
Now that we have a real book collection, we need to organize our books so that students can easily find (and return) books according to their interest and level.
Since we are a bilingual classroom, we will use red bins for our Spanish books and blue for our English books to clearly differentiate between languages. We will laminate labels and attach them to the bins with velcro tabs so that labels can be easily changed as need arises. These labels will help students identify books at their level and/or by favorite topic. Additionally, we will label individual books so that they can be easily returned to their homes. The new supplies will make our library more usable and protect books for future generations of students. We are so excited for our students to rediscover a well-organized, colorful library.
