My students need an active play pack for equipment to use during recess. This will help them to experience organized play instead of just running around with no purpose.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's bring recess fun back to the play yard with some equipment.
I teach 5th graders who live in the inner-city.
They attend the local community public school. The students are full of energy, however they lack some of the joys of childhood that I remember, such as playing outside for hours. We played hand clapping games, hopscotch, jump rope, tag, and football. We didn't have a care in the world. Many of the kids or their parents are fearful for the kids' safety so they tend to stay inside and watch television, play video games or talk on the cell phone. They may go to the park once in a while and they get most of their playtime at school.
My Project
My students only get about 25 minutes of recess a day and two forty-five minute physical education periods a week. Research shows that kids should be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day to stay fit and healthy. Many of my students don't want to go to gym or recess. I found that odd because when I was little that was the best part of the day. My students don't even want to run or be outside. I believe with the active play equipment that has balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, and mitts will help motivate the kids to want to play. In addition, they can learn how to play the classic games and create some of their own. This will help break the monotony of the day and provide the students an opportunity to socialize and problem solve through interactive play.
Our First Lady Michelle Obama recognizes the importance of kids being active.
It doesn't require much. All we need to do is help the kids get up and move. I know this equipment will motivate the kids to actually play and not just sit on the sidelines. Although, our time is limited I want to help my students maximize the time they have to be active, have fun and smile.
