My students need CDs with movement/music activities, a CD/tape player to play them on and toys that promote movement, exercise and balance.

My Students
Do you remember snowy or rainy days when you were stuck in the classroom without the chance to stretch your legs? My kindergarten special education students crave movement and exercise, especially on those days when we can't get outside. Physical movement is key to their ability to focus and learn.
My class is a cross-categorical special education class.
I serve kindergarten age students. This is a full-day program. My students have a variety of disabilities including autism, cognitive disabilities, speech delays, emotional disabilities and other health impairments. My students live in a high poverty area, so their opportunities are limited. My students are inquisitive and excited about learning. Providing them with as many new experiences as possible is a high priority. Some of my students have been in a half-day special education classroom for 3-4 year olds, but others have not had prior schooling. Keeping the learning environment fun and inviting for the children is a key to their continued success. Learning balance, coordination and rhythm is a very important part of their learning experience. Exercise is very important to these children since many of our students don't have the opportunity to play outside at home. They often lack nutritional foods at home.
My Project
Don't you love seeing children play and laughing at a park or in a back yard? The sound of children's laughter is contagious. The movement Cds, CD/tape player and movement toys will bring that excitement right into the classroom. It is impossible for kindergarten age students to sit all day. They need to get up and shake it up! These materials will allow my students to dance, jump, spin, run, throw bean bags, get their legs and arms moving, increase balance and coordination and increase their endurance. These movement activities will also allow the children the chance to practice following directions and increase their listening skills. They will also promote self-direction and help them learn to work and play with others. These activities will be done once, it not twice, a day. Getting the blood flowing through their veins will prepare them for learning!
Exercise is vitally important to children today.
I want to encourage my students to get up and get moving. I also want them to have fun doing exercises. Many of these children live in dangerous neighborhoods, so they don't have the opportunity to ride their bike down the street or go to the neighborhood park. I want the classroom to be their safe park! Please help my students have a safe place to exercise and build their physical strength and endurance. Thank you!
