My students need alternative seating, textured and visual fidgets, as well as items that can be used to adapt their traditional seating to meet their needs.
This is my first year teaching sixth grade. Many of my students struggle with traditional seating and seem to do well focusing when they're able to move, fidget and release some of their restless energy.
Kids are naturally energetic (even at this age) and expecting them to sit at their desks all day just isn't developmentally appropriate.
My kids need to be able to choose alternative seating during our small group flex time in order to truly keep the focus on their academic tasks.
My Project
When students come to my small group reading table for targeted instruction, they'll be able to sit on exercise balls which allow them to move while they learn. Rubber bands will go on the front legs of chairs so that students again have an outlet for their extra energy without disturbing others so that we can all focus on the task in front us.
Textured and visual fidgets will help my students learn to recenter their emotions while they sit in our Take-A-Break area.
It also makes our TAB area more appealing to students so they are more willing to head over to the TAB area when redirected. These are skills that will benefit them long after they leave my classroom.
