My Students

Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our city. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.

Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.

We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.

My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of, instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.

My Project

One of the biggest hurdles that I face in my high school special education classroom is the ability to pay attention and complete tasks in a timely fashion while in class. These two reasons are, by far, why students need to have concepts re-taught to them in my resource classroom. The MotivAider is a device that combines the functionalities of a beeper and a timer into one, compact design that the student wears on a belt clip. A teacher/student sets the time interval that they want to be alerted and the estimated total time to complete the task, and at each time interval, a silent vibration goes off, alerting the student as to how much time has passed, with a longer interval starting when the time for the task has elapsed.

By donating to our project, you are helping students foster the concepts of time management, how to estimate the time needed to complete a task, and most importantly, how to do all of these things independently.

Although standing near students can be helpful, in high school, I am truly wanting to foster the concept of independence without reminders from adults or peers, all the while teaching them how to complete tasks in a timely fashion. These concepts will transfer to their later employment field where they will need to have these skills honed to perfection.
