My project needs one HP PhotoSmart Photo Studio with digital camera and photo print station, a pack of 50 recordable CDs, and an extra pack of 4x6 photo printing paper.
My current school is a K-5 elementary school that serves 600+ students. I am one of six fifth-grade teachers. All classes are self-contained, with each teacher being responsible for all academic subjects. The ability levels range from students being served by a resource teacher to students served by a gifted and talented teacher, and many levels between the others listed.
Our school population is so large that it is sometimes hard to have easy access to items, such as a digital camera. Also, the fact that each grade level has only one digital camera, makes it difficult to allow students to experiment with using this type of technology. This has made it difficult for my students to complete various technological projects. Last summer I received in-depth training to include moviemaker software in my curriculum, but my students need instant access to a digital camera to make the projects successful.
The project that I would like to submit includes students becoming comfortable with using a digital camera to take everyday candid shots of each other throughout the year. After students create a photo library, they will use the photos to create a short film using moviemaker software, which is already loaded on our school computers. The goal of the project will be for each student to create their own movie CD to remember their fifth grade experience through various pictures that have been taken throughout the school year. Also, students will become familiar in printing pictures of each other using the photo print station. Each student will become a photographer, taking and printing pictures of other students to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, terrific kid awards, etc. The students will be able to take these pictures home to share with friends and family.
The benefit of this project is that students will become familiar with new technology, and also allow them to create a classroom family. I feel that this project will create a sense of community because the students will be so excited to use the new technology, and that will encourage them to pick up the camera and take photos of other students who they may not typically socialize with during the school day. I am excited about the possibility of sharing this project with my fifth grade students.
