My Students

Being able to purchase supplies for my classroom, it will allow my students to learn in their choice of environment and will help them stay focused. I teach at in Charlotte, NC. My school is located in West Charlotte, one of the roughest, poorest and most dangerous areas in Charlotte. My scholars, second graders, have to overcome adversity everyday by simply showing up to school to learn. Too many of our students are homeless, underprivileged and just in need of some love. My job as their teacher is to not only teach them, but to also care for them, love them and encourage them to do their best every single day. Majority of my students start the school year, drastically below grade level in reading and math. It is my job to make sure I not only prepare them for third grade but also to set them up for success for their whole life! Our school has limited funding so I make tons of my own stuff as well purchase many classroom items on my own. I cannot wait to be able to use these supplies and books in my classroom everyday!

My Project

Everyday we force kids to read books on their level that they may or may not want to read but need to in order to grow their brains. Often times, we lose sight of reading being something we do for fun. By the time kids get to 2nd and 3rd grade, they have been told so many times the books they have to read, that they often dread reading, especially our babies who struggle. These books will help make reading fun AGAIN! They will allow our students to become engaged in reading without the pressure of retelling or having to do a worksheet! I picked out fun themed books such as the different gingerbread man stories, the old lady who swallowed series and even some classics like Ferdinand. So many of my students don't read at home with their parents so the more we read for fun in the classroom and the more variety of books we read, the more my kids will learn to love reading!
