This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine life without music? Music is a way of expression. I want my students to have the opportunity to experience and create music so they can develop important skills that will help them succeed while at the same time giving them the chance to express themselves.

I teach in a public school in the same neighborhood I grew up.

Most of the students in my school come from low-income families and are faced with drugs and violence on the streets. My 4 and 5 year-olds are very eager and active students full of energy that will benefit immensely from music experience in the classroom.

My Project

Researchers conclude that arts-infused programs in public schools increase student achievement. My students' involvement in music experience in kindergarten will help them succeed. What they learn in my kindergarten class will be a foundation for their future learning. Music is not only fun and engaging. It also helps to develop important skills, such as listening, sequencing, and patterning, that are needed in all academic areas. My students will learn about beats, rhythm and patterns in music. They will learn how to read invented symbols that represent beats and follow along as they use a variety of instruments. They will learn to work as a cohesive group as an orchestra or band would.

With your support, my students will experience music in the classroom, create rhythms using their imagination and, express themselves and ultimately develop valuable skills that will help them succeed academically.
