My Students
Welcome! I am a teacher who is new to Philadelphia, working at a school that serves elementary-aged students representing historically marginalized communities. As a special education teacher, I work with students with a variety of disabilities and support needs in grades 3-5.
I am eager to provide a safe, playful, and joyful space for children to grow as learners and as members of their community.
My Project
Let's face it, math is not always every student's favorite time of day. But this does not have to be the case!! Math instruction can be playful, social, joyful, and engaging. I strongly believe in a play-based approach to teaching mathematics, especially for my special education classroom for grades 3-5. Through playful learning experiences, I want to engage students in risk-taking, puzzle-solving, and collaborative math instruction that best meets their needs and interests.
A playful math learning environment will encourage students to engage meaningfully in their math learning, learn socially alongside their peers, and will encourage deep, lasting learning.
I strive to enrich my special education math intervention curriculum with play-based experiences to balance IEP goals and state standards with engaging experiences to help each student grow as a mathematician in a meaningful way.
Here is what I need to get started:
- Polyhedral dice are a wonderful tool for practicing math fact skills. For example, if a student is learning to multiply 2-digit numbers, they can roll two 10-sided dice and then multiply those numbers together. The same can be done for any operation or skill!
- The Book "Math in the Cards" along with decks of cards allow for playful opportunities for practicing math skills and encouraging social and problem-solving skills.
- Games such as Skyjo and Dominos encourage a student's number sense and understanding of numbers.
- Supplies such as sheet protectors and a laminator allow me to preserve math tools and printables to provide my students with high-quality math resources and instructional opportunities.
I can't wait to grow students' love of mathematics!
