Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Over 86% of my student population are English Language Learners where Spanish is their native language. Our school is 100% free or reduced-price lunch. My classroom consists of 18 eager students who are driven to learn on a daily basis. We believe that school-to-home relationships are evident in order to achieve student success.
This year we are building a stronger reading foundation for bilingual students which encompasses a majority of our classroom population!
Let's give them the tools that they need.
My Project
My students are in need of materials that accommodate an entire class. For instance, we are always short on materials and with our new students from Puerto Rico and being a Title 1 school, the struggle is real. I would like to offer my students materials such as the "seat sack" to organize their daily essentials. This helps them build lifelong skills needed in the 21st-century workplace. In addition, I would like to add to our class library, so that multiple students can hear the same book on cd and do collaborative projects with them. We only have 1 book per cd and therefore it makes it difficult to have them work in groups. Allowing a group of 4 students to hear the same book on cd, paves the way for robust conversations and connections to be made. Lastly, I need a class set of clipboards so that my students can take learning on the go. I plan to use these clipboards for rug work, teacher table, and to take learning outside. My students are constantly recording and revising their knowledge within our classroom walls, we are limited to the number of clipboards we have. I can differentiate activities with the colored boards. Assigning colors serves as a visual cue and makes learning pop! Lastly, I need expo markers to do rhyming words with my students and phonics lessons.
