My Students

It might be hard to imagine but my special education students have so much in common with Edison; they understand what it means to persevere in the face of failure and constantly stay positive.

I have the privilege of working with kids who come to me every day knowing they’re going work, they’re going to stumble, but they’re going to learn.

They do it with a smile on their face because eventually they get their “light bulb” moment. The moment when their faces light up with the pride of understanding and success, it’s amazing to see. My Edisons come from diverse and varied backgrounds, but despite these challenges, they don’t fail. They find 10,000 ways to learn.

My Project

As a special education teacher, I try to teach my students in a variety of ways. Teaching phonics to children with dyslexia and language disabilities is especially challenging for me this year.I feel like I could use better techniques and training to give them the best education possible.

The Fundations program will help me understand the principles of phonics instruction that engages multiple learning modalities with multisensory instruction, repetition, and immediate feedback.

I am asking to attend a Fundations workshop to learn and implement the appropriate methods to teach reading to students who have dyslexia. After learning how to implement these techniques with any child who has a learning disability, as an educator, I know my students would be receiving the best education possible.
