Let's Learn to Read at the Listening Center, Part 2

My Students

My Kindergarten class is in Northeast Florida in a rapidly growing county.

My goal for the summer is to have them continue their love of reading, which we have worked so hard on during our year of remote learning.

As we end the school year, all 22 kindergarteners have grown and thrived in our distance learning class. Even though we are learning remotely, with the teacher in the classroom and the children safely at home, they have worked so hard to become a school family and learn as much as possible.

My Project

We began this journey of acquiring more book and CD sets in February of 2020. It has taken almost two years to continue this journey since our class was full distance learning during the last school year, which meant no children were in the classroom to enjoy our listening center. We are now ready to continue down the path of becoming better readers using our listening center.

Providing a listening center in kindergarten helps children develop many skills during kindergarten.

They learn the importance of hearing the spoken word, understanding what is being said, and forming an opinion on what you have heard. Students hear how exciting a story can be as they learn reading is a wonderful source of pleasure. Children will also have the opportunity to develop their vocabulary through hearing a story read aloud.

A wide variety of book and CD sets will help enhance all of these skills in my students. The small book rack and book bags will give us a safe storage space to keep the books and CDs together, as well as easily accessible.
