Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Increasing vocabulary is so important and it is even more important to begin early with a child. Our six year olds are already learning Japanese as a second language and I would like to expand their learning by having an after school program that will focus on learning Spanish using social skills.
My students are Kindergartners that include some of my former PreK students.
They become really excited when they go to the PreK class and sing some of the songs that they are learning in Japanese. Our classroom is very small and we have become really connected and enjoy coming to school everyday. Our students show their enthusiasm for school because we have received high percentages of attendance since school has begun.
Our school is the School of Environmental Engineering and we believe in contributing to our planet. We have a school garden and a hydroponic lab that are maintained by our student body. Our school has a strong community of parents and are very involved with the many activities that are offered at our school. Some of those activities include our monthly parents in the classroom, numerous workshops, assemblies and our parent teacher conferences.
We have a great diverse population at our school which provides many opportunities for learning to take place.
My Project
The materials that are requited will be used for an after school program that will meet twice a week to learn and/or enhance our Spanish skills. I plan to display the materials displayed so that the students are excited to learn the language. I plan to create a schedule that includes movement and opportunities for social interactions. The students will learn songs in Spanish that are developmentally appropriate and learn some sounds/ words in spanish. One important component of learning a new language at the age of six, is socializing and there will be plenty of opportunities for socialization to take place. We will work on increasing vocabulary by playing board games and reading books that include audio and those read by the teacher,
At the end of the program, students will learn some songs that they will in turn sing to their parents and administrators to show their development and ease using Spanish to communicate. Depending on the growth of the students, we may perform a skit.
I believe that any time that something new is introduced, students are willing to try and please.
I also believe that it is very important how materials are presented because it will determine the success of the learning. As a bilingual person myself, i think that I may begin by speaking Spanish myself and see who is drawn to try the materials and once you get one student to try something new, most will follow. I will monitor their progress and encourage the parents to practice at home as well.
