Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to explore and are very curious. This year we are going to continue exploring ways that they can do their best learning. We are going to explore flexible seating and personalized learning so that each student can persevere and excel this year. My students' abilities range widely, but I want to be able to provide an inclusive environment that adapts to each student's needs.

My school is located in the inner city.

There are about 1,200 students in grade PreK-5. Most of my students live in low-income households. Many of my students are starting out the year below grade level, and we will be working on ways to improve their reading skills and comprehension. Our school is overcrowded, and my students will have to spend almost the whole day in our classroom. They will have to find new ways to learn and concentrate on their work independently. However, they are all eager and excited to learn, especially when when it comes to choosing their own learning.

My Project

My students will be working on becoming more independent and working on learning in the best way possible. Because they will be in my room for most of the school day, I want them to have a number of different choices of places and ways to accomplish their work.

I want my students to be comfortable moving around our classroom.

They will be able to use their new seating to work anywhere in the room that works for them. The wobble stools and balance balls will help them get their wiggles out and exercise their cores while learning. The floor seats will help them be comfortable on the floor. They will use the bouncy bands while working in traditional desks. This way, they'll be able to concentrate better and not worry about getting in trouble for moving around in their seats while they work.

After any lesson, they will be able to move to a spot of their choice and continue their own independent work. This will force them to learn to share better and to rely on their choices to help themselves be more responsible. Without this seating, my students would be stuck in their desks all day with only intermittent brain breaks to help them concentrate more. That's no way for kids to learn!

These flexible seating options will help reinforce the personalized learning and growth mindset work we'll be doing in the room. It's my job to be able to reach each student to make sure they are excited about learning. I feel it's my job to help them to see that hard work and practice does pay off, and grit helps them to succeed. I want my students to try their best. And this seating will help them all to try their best on their own.
