Let's Learn Math!

My students need hands-on math manipulatives such as a magnetic numbers kit, tracing numbers, and a 1-100 pocket chart kit to continue learning to count single digits, single-digit addition, count by 10's and to write numbers clearly.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Overa's classroom raised $185

My Students

Our day is full with academics, life skills, therapy, and sensory and fun! My goal for my students regarding math is for each of them to reach their individual goals, e.g., identifying numbers 1-10, writing 1-100, single-digit addition to 10, or using manipulatives to show a math problem.

I am a Special Education Teacher in a wonderfully diverse Title 1 School.

The students that I serve are identified as having moderate to severe disabilities. Our program is unique in that we spend a large portion of our day with a general education partner class; inclusion is heavily supported. Despite the challenges they face, our students continue to work hard each day showing a love of learning and a strong work ethic. The students are in K/1/2 and have various disabilities. Some of the students are impacted physically and most are identified as being non-verbal. We use various forms of communication and materials to serve students based on their individual needs. All of my students are learning at their own pace, and I am proud to be their teacher. Our program holds high expectations for learning, and our students continue to work hard each day to meet their goals.

My Project

Due to my students' special needs, we require manipulatives and materials that are highly visual and tactile. Having visuals helps my students organize what they are learning and reinforces our math lessons. For example, if we see the Giant Magnetic Ten Frames, we can organize the items and count them. Some of my students have visual impairments; the bright colors and tactile materials like the Addition & Subtraction Discovery Can help them as well. Most of the students are learning to write as well, which is why I love the idea of Giant Tracing Numbers that have numbers written for them to trace over. This combines well with the general education curriculum that introduces numbers that we have adapted our materials from. We can use the Classroom Magnetic Numbers Kit and 1-100 Pocket Chart Kits to play games as well, which all of my students enjoy. While the students each have their own individual math goals from number recognition to single-digit addition, I can use these materials to reach every student in my program. Some students can use the materials individually while others are receiving 1:1 help.

This class is a group of strong students; when they have the materials that can be adapted to meet their needs they continue to learn and grow.

These materials will help students continue to increase their math knowledge, have hands-on experiences, and engage with materials that they can feel, write on, and re-use for reinforcement. They can also use them with their general education peers to practice. My ultimate goal for my students is to continue to show improvement and love learning Math.
