Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What children need is not new and better curricula but access to more and more of the real world". My students genuine excitement and curiosity about the world around them is evidence that they need and deserve materials that will fuel their inquiry and lead them to the highest academic gains.

In San Antonio's inner city, my 11 and 12 year-old students are already preparing for college.

The majority of my students live in poverty and know more about inequality than any child should. Many of my six graders come from single parent homes and the vast majority of them will be the first in their families to go to college. Despite living with such stress, my students come to school ready to learn and focused on college. Our charter school puts such a heavy emphasis on college that students attend school from 7:30 am to 5 pm everyday. With an extended schedule, students attend my class for 85 minutes a day. Extra time affords us more learning opportunities, yet our current resources hold us back from creating the most accurate and meaningful research projects. My six graders want to learn about the world and in our increasingly global society, they desperately need this knowledge and skill set to compete and have success in their educational and professional careers.

My Project

To prepare for college, my students will engage in a research project at the end of each unit. Students will be required to check out a book at the beginning of each research cycle to select a topic. Non-fiction books build students reading skills. When they move on to 7th grade, their reading levels will not hold them back from accessing the more difficult non-fiction curriculum. Next, students will use the up-to-date books to collect information on their specific world topic. Finally, students will be required to sort their research to glean the most relevant information for their project. Many of our current class books are old and outdated. Students often look at these books and think of them as old, tired, and not that important. The new books for our library will not only inform their research, but push them to create more accurate and detailed projects. Being informed global citizens and literate readers will allow them to reach their goal of collegiate success in 2017!

In our increasing global society, students must have a firm grasp of the world in which they live.

Without the same enriching opportunities most affluent children have, our students start the competitive race to college one step behind. Don't let the circumstances and zip code my students were born into determine their life prospects. All children deserve the right to an excellent education. Quench my students thirst for knowledge and put a book in their hand. It will make a world of difference!
