Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my 7th and 8th grade English classes, students read novels and informational articles. They need to do research and write about these texts. Ideally, by the end of the year, students will be able to address all parts of complex writing prompts.

Students at my school are as diverse as can be imagined.

They are friendly. They are loud. They are full of life. Mostly, they come from working class families. My school is a small K-8 magnet. Student are bussed in from all parts of the city. Some students spend two hours a day riding the bus just to avoid attending their local neighborhood schools.

My Project

Recently we finished reading the graphic novel Persepolis. Students loved the story and the history lesson it taught. Many students read the book quickly, outpacing my lesson plan. It is a wonderful (and rare) thing to see students devour literature. Having copies of Persepolis 2 available in the classroom will give students the opportunity to continue reading quality literature that they enjoy.

In my opinion, there is nothing more important to a person's education that reading.

Students need to develop a love and appreciation for reading. It helps foster the intellectual curiosity that motivates students to attend college and pursue meaningful careers. When I find texts that students enjoy, I pounce on the opportunity to support them. In this case, acquiring copies of Persepolis 2 will allow students to keep their heads buried in a good book.
