My Students
I am a teacher at a Title I school where 90% of my students live in low-income households. Our school was shut down in March of 2020, and since then, the community has worked tirelessly to provide adequate virtual education for all learners. Although students are still able to receive the free daily meals that they are used to receiving in school, there are new and unexpected challenges being faced. Many of my students lack the supplies necessary to make their at-home learning environment meaningful and adequate. Learning through a screen can be extremely challenging, for both students and educators.
Even while facing all of these challenges, the 28 fourth graders at my school work extremely hard during virtual learning; they deserve nothing less than the best experiences and materials!
The encouragement, positivity, and collaboration of our students continues to amaze me every day. Despite all the uncertainty of this year and the amount of learning they have missed out on due to the pandemic, they continue to persevere and make learning so meaningful! They deserve to be afforded all of the opportunities that they would have in a brick and mortar setting.
My Project
As the fourth grade Math and Virginia Studies teacher for my grade, I know how important it is for students to really engage with learning and connect to background knowledge with what I teach! During a regular school year, my students would constantly be using tactile materials: sorting polygons vs. nonpolygons using manipulatives, trading barter cards during our colonial Virginia unit, and so much more. Even though it has been challenging, I work hard to provide my students with these same learning opportunities while online! Making online materials from scratch can be time-consuming and makes for long days in front of my computer screen.
