My Students

"How can I learn if I have trouble just sitting still? I want to be successful, but I'm so easily distracted! I feel as though I am always on the move! I'm not good at math and I do not like to read." Speak with any one of my students and they will tell you that these are their everyday struggles.

My students have emotional and behavior disorders as well as ADHD.

Meeting the demands of a typical school day can be very difficult for them, which is why they attend an alternative school for special education students in the Chicago suburbs. We are located in a high poverty area and many of my students come from economically challenged families. Additionally, the majority of students who attend my school are African-American. All of my students struggle in the area of reading and math. Test scores show that they are below grade level and are in need of immediate interventions. My students require high interest and very engaging activities to help them improve their reading and math skills and these resources are perfect for them!

My Project

My students need Math Plinko, Ready-To-Go Vocabulary Station, Launch It! Vocabulary Center, and High-Interest Intervention Reading Folders. With these resources, my students will be able to improve their reading and math skills in order to achieve success at grade level (and for some, beyond!). The reading resources are very engaging with high interest stories and excellent visuals, vital to keeping students focused and excited about learning. Also included are reading and math games that will draw the students in and make good use of that competitive streak that children seem to innately have. With these resources, my students will be excited about learning and distractions will fade away. Plus, the highly engaging games allow students the movement they need, all while improving their reading and math skills! Before they know it, my students will have improved reading comprehension, reading fluency, vocabulary, and math computation skills. As an added bonus, their confidence will soar!

Each day, when we divide into our groups for our learning centers, my students will be excited to participate in these fun activities.

As they improve their reading and math skills, they will realize how fun learning can be and how success really can be theirs! My goal is not only to have my students achieve grade level reading comprehension, vocabulary and math computation, but to also gain confidence that they will carry with them for years to come.
