Let's Hit the Ground Reading

My students need books and magazines to add nonfiction to our library, book bags to encourage independent reading at home, and comfy pillows to make reading more fun.

My Students

This year, our school is transitioning to the Common Core standards to prepare our students to successfully meet the demands of more rigorous state exams. In order to meet their incredible potential as readers and thinkers, my English Language Learners need to become confident, independent readers.

I am the proud teacher of 24 fantastic third graders at a public elementary school where 90% of students are English Language Learners and 100% qualify to receive free school breakfast and lunch.

School wide, only 28% of our kids are reading on grade level. In a struggling public school where low expectations permeate our environment, my class is determined to work relentlessly to meet our big goal: we will ALL grow 1.5 years as readers and pass the state ELA exams! In order to meet the new challenges of the Common Core standards, my kids need the opportunity to read nonfiction texts (at least 50%). As English Language Learners, many of my kids already see reading as an unpleasant task. My goal is to make reading fun by providing more interesting reading materials and encouraging independent reading both at school and at home.

My Project

Our classroom library does not have enough books to inspire and challenge all of my enthusiastic young readers. My kids need access to engaging nonfiction texts in order to master the Common Core standards. These new nonfiction books and subscriptions to TIME for Kids magazine will enrich our classroom and support us in reaching our big goal! The book bags will enable my students to take books home, and the comfy cushions will make independent reading at school more fun!

I am convinced that when given the opportunity, my amazing kids can and will be extremely successful!

Your help will ensure that my students reach their fullest potential as growing readers. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
