This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am currently working as an elementary school counselor servicing students in two schools in Ozone Park, New York. Having experience in two buildings, I am able to work with such a wide variety of needs. I work with both general education and special education students. I provide individual and group counseling to students as well as whole-class instruction through push-in lessons.
I love my students because I am able to learn just as much from them every day as they learn from me.
While I went to school to be a counselor, I learn every day how to be a better counselor because of my students. My students are experiencing a trauma that they have never experienced before and they need social-emotional support.
My students are special because they come from all walks of life. No two are the same. Each one of them holds a story of how they became who they are today in this very moment. Those stories are what make them unique and special. Who they are as a person- their qualities, their interests, likes, dislikes. Where they shine, where they need growth. Those are the things that make them special.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning as they will help to address their social-emotional needs during a time of trauma, unknown, and uncertainty. Students will need a social-emotional skillset to help address their needs. These materials will help students who are learning from home as I will provide in-person counseling services as well as remote services.
Social-emotional learning is more important now than ever.
In an ever-changing world, we need to make sure that this social-emotional curriculum supports all students.
To paint the picture of what this will look like, I figured it is best to share why I love my job. I love my job because of the fact that I can work with a variety of different students who come from all walks of life. I love teaching students about feelings and helping them identify what to do with those feelings. I love teaching students about empathy and how they can form better relationships with others. I love teaching my students about equity and how we need to embrace our differences. I love teaching young students how to share and take turns and how to problem-solve when they get stuck. I love teaching students about friendship and how to make friends. Most importantly, I love my students and how excited they are to come to counseling. I love how much they love learning about these things- it makes their growth so much easier :)
