My students need 13 digital thermometers to carry out lab experiments in earth science class throughout the duration of the school year.

My Students

Let's heat things up! Do you remember your high school science classes? Were they exciting? Did you "do stuff"? An interest in science comes from doing science! Doing science can't be done without tools. Our class needs thermometers to carry out investigations.

My students are freshman in high school.

They live in a rural town and are very interested in learning about how our environment works and challenges that it faces. The are excited to participate in lab investigations and do their best thinking when engaged in such a manner. They are the next generation of problem solvers!

My Project

The thermometers will help with so many different investigations! In the beginning of the year we create compost piles to discuss how nature recycles energy and learn about biochemical process associated with changes in temperature. Currently, we are study climate change and the greenhouse effect. Students will again need thermometers to measure how greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide influence temperature change over a period of time. More importantly, students will gain experience in problem solving, critical thinking and making connections between real life events and class studies. Having and using accurate measurement tools is the first step in developing these skills.

If society wishes to include young, energetic citizens who are willing to help solve global scientific problems, students must have access to equipment to test ideas and generate solutions.

Practical application is a necessary part of learning if we want citizens interested in tackling real-world dilemmas. Simple tools like digital thermometers offer students the opportunity to connect ideas and provide reasonable explanations of results generated from own ideas for investigative research.
