This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Inspiring guitar virtuosos in the Inner-City. I teach twenty-fourth and fifth students guitar in an after school guitar program in urban Southern California. We were initially given 20 guitars by Little Kids Rock based on the East Coast, but we are hurting for supplies to upkeep the instruments. We are teaching students in a poverty stricken, gang riddled community. This is the only thing some of these kids look forward to is our class twice each week.

This is the first instrument many of these students have ever touched. It's amazing to see their faces. They love it. If we, the teachers, hadn't attended a training to get free instruments and given them this opportunity, most of these students may never have been touched by music. The fact is the school district demands teachers to cut art and music out of the classroom first. With that, we have to have a class after school. We have no supplies to fix our guitars, no extra strings, no pics, and no strap buttons. We have spent our own money on picks and buying extra strings. We got a donation of straps, now how do we put them on classical guitars without strap buttons? We need your help.

We need picks for students to play with. We need strings to fix guitars that are missing strings. We also need strap buttons so we can put straps on the guitars because we want the students to perform live and stand up like real musicians.

These kids are good. They are getting it. We brought in some of our electric guitars from home and they are good. We are performing in front of the whole school, so that is why we need these resources. Your help will ensure that these students will not be without music and the supplies they need. You help will make it possible for the teachers, who are volunteers after school, to be able to teach the guitar classes with greater ease. You will make a difference in these student's lives. Your generous donation will make our guitar program successful.
