Let's hear music!

My students need an iPod touch in order to listen to music in the classroom on the playground. My students need a musical library, with a multicultural music CD, an "All About Me" CD, and a "Seasons & Weather" CD to encourage and support learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Mary had a little..." isn't it difficult not to finish the words and tune to that little number? That's because our brains are wired to remember tunes, rhymes, and rhythmic patterns. Incorporating music into learning is a very powerful tool because it helps to solidify learning and is fun!

I teach first grade students in an area of Los Angeles that is high in poverty and low in resources.

My class is made up of twenty-three six and seven year olds, many of whom are limited in their English. They are eager to learn and technology excites them. The school is a magnet school which means the students have been identified as high ability in academics. Because of this, the regular first grade material is at times below their ability level and I am always trying different engagement strategies. Music is a very powerful learning strategy and I have invested a lot in a music library that year after year students have enjoyed. I have noticed that music transcends language and can be helpful to build language skills and teach many concepts.

My Project

Due to budget cuts, our school has not been able to supply us with new technology to play music on. My classroom cd player is broken and I have not been able to play my music library this school year. I am asking for an iPod because not only will I be able to play my music conveniently by simply hooking up speakers but I can take it outside where we can have more room to express ourselves. Another advantage to having an iPod is that I will be able to download music and videos that will not only motivate but will also inspire students in all subject areas. The students will be able to wear headphones and use the iPod for other learning games provided by our publishers. The music CDs and books I have requested are correlated with reading units and will help build vocabulary and concepts in these areas. They will be especially useful for the students who are developing their English. One of the CDs is filled with multicultural music and will help promote cultural awareness and diversity.

This project will not only impact the 23 students in my class but will allow me to preserve and add to my musical library so I can share it with many students for years to come.

I am sure that sone your fondest memories include music and I am asking you to help make musical memories for my students as well.
