Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in an urban area of Los Angeles. Nearly one hundred percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. When the current health crisis hit, many of our students lacked the basic tools for learning at home: computers or tablets, an internet connection, and a stable, consistent routine for completing their work.

Now that the new school year has started, the students have stepped up to the challenge and are learning how to complete new tasks each day.

They are becoming more self-sufficient as they tackle the various online assignments. However, we lack materials and resources that are adaptable to being completed online by students who have little to no experience with this type of learning.

My Project

The membership to Vocabulary Spelling City will help me provide lively and engaging spelling and vocabulary activities that the students can complete online and receive immediate feedback.

LIkewise, the materials from Mrs Wordsmith feature fun-filled characters with colorful personalities in absurd situations with whom the students enjoy interacting.

We already use some of the Mrs Wordsmith materials in class so they are familiar with the characters and these materials will further interest the students. Using the characters for writing stories will be an important support for some of the more reluctant writers.

Writing, spelling, and grammar are proving to be some of the most challenging subjects to teach remotely and these resources will help the students experience success as they work from home.
