Do you remember the first time you read something about a different culture or place? My students need the experience of reading about the Native American culture that helped to shape America.
My students are some of the brightest in North Carolina.
Our school is an Honor School of Excellence for four straight years now! There are students from many different backgrounds and cultures. However, like many of us, the students do not know much about the cultures of their families. We need a Multicultural Literature class so the students will be able to identify with some of the cultures in the school--their own and those of their classmates.
My Project
My students need 25 copies of The Lakota Way to read and learn about Native American culture. In order to help the students to identify with their own ancestral backgrounds and those of others, my school wants to start a Multicultural Literature class. We just need these books to do it. Please help to give my students a multi-cultural experience. With a class set of "The Lakota Way," the book will help the students to understand the ways of the Lakota Indians as we study their own cultures.
The Multicultural Literature class will help students to know and understand other cultures.
They will encounter stories of men and women who have come to America from other countries; they are trying to fit in. The students will connect with the stories because many times in high school, students really are just trying to find their place in the world and where they fit in.
