My students need to get their hands dirty! Planting, weeding, growing, and gardening. Grab that wheelbarrow and grow!

My Students
The school is an Arts Academy. Student have two core classes: English Language Arts/History and Math/Science. The students then get to choose a foundation class (theater, dance, ensemble, choral, fine arts). The result? The students are excited to be at school. They are motivated and energized both academically and in the arts.
The students I have the opportunity to work with are creative, innovative, enthusiastic young people who are known to thank their teachers when they leave classrooms.
There are over 1,100 students on campus in grades four through eight. In the past few years, the school has blossomed as the result of a visionary principal, progressive staff and active parent community. Bottom line, teachers at this school love to teach their craft to these students who are so happy to be here at this school!
My Project
Our school is an Arts Academy and we recently created a Culinary Arts Class! What better way to start a culinary class than to build an edible garden next to it!
Our culinary garden is going to be a huge undertaking but you will not find teachers, students, or volunteers more excited to start this hard work!
We have a large area outside the culinary class that is broken into three levels. The top level will be raised veggie beds. This is where we will utilize the tomato cages, middle level will be a citrus and a butterfly garden where soil additives are a must due to the existing clay soil, and the lower level will be mediterranean and edible flowers. This is where we will use the butterfly trellis to support jasmine and honeysuckle. We even have an arts teacher that is going to have her students create bird houses to support the harmonious atmosphere of the garden.
We want the garden to be student centered, and so we are thrilled that this garden with raised beds, the butterfly garden, the edible flowers. They will be right next to the classroom so that students can walk out the door and breath in the harmony of a beautiful, nutritious, and well maintained garden.
