Let's Grow Ogo: An Aquaculture Project in Hawaii

My students need 2 air pumps for their ogo seaweed tanks.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Duke's classroom raised $1,020

This project is fully funded

John Dewey would be proud of the projects that our students do. Our school motto is "Dream it, do it". Students participate in an outdoor, hands-on, project-based, interdisciplinary curriculum. The school is comprised of high school students (9th-12th graders) who create science projects within three scientific areas: marine science, malama aina (care for the land), and alternative energy. Students gain critical thinking skills as they repeatedly follow the scientific method through their projects.

Because of the way the Department of Education distributes funds, our school is looking at a decrease in funding next year. For students to continue conducting amazing science projects, we need your support. Our students have shown incredible resourcefulness in using available materials to create their projects. This year, the students built a project area (complete with viewing deck built from scrap wood) for their ogo (seaweed) growing experiments. Next year, students will be designing experiments to figure out the best fertilizer for ogo. In order to conduct this student-driven experiment, ogo needs air pumped into its tank, to keep the plants circulating, so that they receive sufficient sunlight.

Thus, we are asking for a donation of two air pumps that will assist student projects and allow students to meet all state scientific processes standards and some biology and physical science standards. In order to continue our project, we need an air pump that will be used specifically for our project. Once the project is up and running, students will collect data throughout the year, which data will be of benefit to the growing aquaculture industry, which is one of our state's biggest industries. Aquaculture is essential to the ecology of our state in that its research keeps wild fish stocks and other marine life alive. Ogo is of significance because of its ability to help the industry diversify. After collecting the data every couple of weeks, the students will harvest and sell their ogo to community members. Sales of ogo will be a fundraiser for students to take a class trip to visit another high school where another group of students is experimenting with ogo. This trip will give students ideas for experiments they will conduct in subsequent years.

Your help will ensure that students can continue their experiments with ogo seaweed. This will keep students interested in local scientific and ecological industries to give them a sense of what is possible for their future and for the future of our State. In donating to this project, you make it possible for the "dream it, do it" motto to persist at our school.
