Konnichiwa! That's "Hello!" in Japanese! Soon my 2nd graders will begin a unit on Japan for social studies. I teach 2nd grade at a public school in Chicago. I have 25 eager students in my class! 17 of my students are English Language Learners, still acquiring basic English skills, and 4 of my students have special needs. Given my students' diverse backgrounds and needs, there is a wide range of academic abilities in my classroom. Over half of my students really struggle with reading - they have trouble understanding what they are reading and they also have a very difficult time with phonics and fluency (being able to read with speed and accuracy). When we begin studying Japan, my students will be learning about the economy, history, culture and geography of Japan. Our classroom library needs children's books - both fiction and non-fiction - about Japan. When my students have books that are written at their reading level, they are so much more interested and engaged in the learning process because they can research independently or in small groups! They are always so excited to share a fact that they were able to find in a book that was written at their reading level! My students also love hands-on projects that engage them in the subject! So I have asked for several books about origami, sudoku and Mt. Fuji. I have also asked for art supplies because part of the unit I am planning will have the students create models of Mt. Fuji so that they can actually see how big the ancient volcano is! My students have the opportunity to check a book out of our classroom library every day, so these books would also be taken home and shared with family and friends! These books and materials will generate excitement about Japan and reading for many others outside of our classroom! These resources would be so great to have in our classroom! They will help actively engage my students in their study of Japan! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal!
