Help me give my students 25 cash register drawers to learn money life skills and how to give change back correctly. We currently use shoe boxes and egg cartons which aren't very efficient.

My Project

Math Merchants is a role play in which the fourth and fifth grade students are learning real life money management skills by buying and selling goods and services in our classroom city that they are creating. As a group, students take ownership of their city by naming their city and determining the types of businesses they will build. Using their writing skills, students then apply for a job at the store or office they would like to manage.

Students are hired to work and build a storefront, determine the goods or services they will sell, and establish prices and discounts.

Store managers create a catalog of goods, and office managers prepare the tools they will use to perform their services.

Once the businesses are created, students take turns being buyers and sellers. Salaries are earned through work in the stores as well as class work. Sellers track and calculate daily sales, apply taxes, calculate discounts, and make change. Buyers make purchasing decisions, use cash, check, and debit cards to make purchases, and track their daily spending. Buyers are also subject to “situation cards” that add unexpected events to their shopping experience.

By using Math Merchants, the students will gain knowledge and experience about connecting math to real world applications, understanding and applying decimals and percentages, understanding how check and ATM cards are used in our monetary system, and communicating mathematically orally and in writing.

They will develop skills in adding and subtracting decimals, counting money, making correct change, writing checks, maintaining a check register, keeping financial records, and calculating percentages.
