Let's Go Green

My students need two worm bins with worms, a worm-vue wonders kit, a Planet Earth DVD set and 8 books, including "10 Things I Can Do to Help My World" and "365 Ways to Live Green for Kids".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Dye's classroom raised $604

This project is fully funded

My highly capable fourth and fifth grade students are natural leaders. I would like to use their intelligence and leadership to turn our elementary school into a green school and then share that process with other schools.

Last year my class took over the recycling program for the school. Faithfully, they collected the recycling each week. Over the year we saw a dramatic increase in the amount we recycle.

I would like to spend the entire year turning our school into a green school. I would begin by teaching my students what being green means using the Teaching Green curriculum. At the same time, students would get the recycling program up and running. I would also have three waste audits during the school year. A group of people from waste management help the students collect, sort and weigh the garbage. Students get a visual picture of what is thrown out school-wide every day and can monitor our improvement through the year. In October, students would plan and conduct their own green school assembly. After the assembly, I would have my students visit each classroom and teach students about being green. I requested different picture books for this purpose along with the elementary version of Teaching Green. I would also like to start a school worm bin to compost lunch waste. My class would be in charge of maintaining this. The compost will be used to fertilize our school garden. During this whole process, I would have the students document their process through digital pictures to be shared with other schools.

Your donation will have an impact on an entire school community. Thank you so much for your generosity.
