Washington, D.C. is a place where music guides the mind and body. However, our students do not currently have any of the necessary equipment to learn how to express their creativity through their favorite medium - music. Our goal is to have a functioning music program and student band by 2017.
All of our students are unique, but they have a common story in which a traditional education setting was not successful for them.
Our students need the constant engagement, challenge, and motivation in order to best function. We know that a real music program, if offered at our alternative public high school, would encourage our students to interact in a freer and more creative environment. This would allow them to tap into another type of intelligence often ignored in education. They love to rhyme, rap, and dance to express their thoughts, which is why having a functional music program would teach them how to positively channel their preferred type of expression and simultaneously teach them a marketable skill.
My Project
A non-traditional school necessitates a non-traditional music program. A more modern program that doesn't start with scales and arpeggios, but is grounded in the engine of 21st century music, the drums and bass. Many students already have exhibited strong musical personality and ability. The first step will be to conduct a thorough survey of all students abilities and place them in the proper environment to allow that to blossom. Singers, keyboardists, percussionists, MCs, dancers, etc. Imagine a classroom where students are not compliant, rather they are the leaders guiding their own learning. This is the vision we aim to achieve, which can only be possible through the donors like you.
Music can help a person's life for the better regardless of their career path.
The skills required to play music, by yourself or with others, are the same as those required to navigate the constant unexpected challenges we face in today's world. Additionally, experience has taught educators that when students have more outlets to express their creativity, issues such as truancy and embedded anger start to diminish. And these are the two issues challenging our alternative school.
