My students need a class set of Pax by Sara Pennybacker to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as they read and connect with other students from around the world.
Did you ever want to read the book that everyone was talking about? Now image reading a book along with over 500,000 students in 60 different countries--even the author! Thanks to technology and the Global Read Aloud project, my students have an amazing opportunity to share what they are reading and learning with more than just their classmates for the second year in a row.
My students are full of energy and love learning!
They come from a multitude of backgrounds and have a wide range of abilities. Our classroom is always buzzing with students critically thinking about the world around them, encouraging each other to do their best, and asking for ways to further their learning. We are a city school that is mostly attended by students from low-income families, many of which qualify for assistance. Many of my students rarely get opportunities to leave their neighborhoods or travel on vacations outside of the state. This project allows them to gain another perspective of the world while practicing literacy and communication skills.
My Project
Students at my school love learning about the world around them. However, teaching in a urban district brings it challenges to showing them the world and connecting with others. Our school has taken initiative to help our students gain a better understanding of geography through building connections and relationships across the globe. One way that this becomes possible is through the Global Read Aloud. For six weeks, two classrooms connect via social media while reading a common title.
Students gain global awareness while sharing reading strategies and conversations with other students (sometimes even the author joins the discussions!) Through creative thinking students rekindle a love of reading and an enthusiasm for learning.
With your donations, our class will have a copy of "Pax" for everyone. Over the course of six weeks, students will be reading with students across the world. Since 2010 this project has influenced over 1,000,000 students in 60 countries. Visit the following link for more information. https://theglobalreadaloud.com
