My students need foam trays to make the gliders and the hot glue to hold their designs together. It's going to be great seeing their faces as their planes fill the room!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. DeSilva's classroom raised $536

My Students
Engineering class is a combination of craft time and problem solving. My students get a design challenge and a list of materials. Their job is to be like MacGyver and make something that works.
My students are a hot mess just like every other middle school-er I've ever met.
However, in addition to your normal adolescent / puberty issues, my students also come from low-income neighborhoods and military families - sometimes both. My students are from broken homes and homes that move every couple of years. They are strong willed and eager to learn. I find it a wonderful challenge to create projects that engage their mind and teach them real world skills.
My Project
The project is going to be awesome. The students are going to get hot glue and a foam tray and they are going to have to make a glider. They will learn problem solving and sketching techniques. They will also learn about the basic principles of flight and get into calculating trajectory.
This project will help my students understand flight, but also realize the feeling of success when they make something terrific out of basic household materials.
Project based learning doesn't have to be expensive to be fun. If done correctly, my students will learn, have fun and maybe even decide to be the next aerospace engineer for NASA.
Half of students from low‑income households
