FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. K.'s classroom raised $214
This project is fully funded
Our small K-12 school in Johnson Bayou on the coastline of Louisiana was destroyed by hurricane Rita. We are still not able to occupy our school building as repairs are being made and students attend class everyday in portable buildings. While our community is slowly being rebuilt, the students get to escape the harsh reality of their home life while at school.
In my high school math classes, I strive to make learning math fun and relate lessons to real life situations. Since all of our teaching resources were destroyed by the hurricane we are making do with the bare essentials. In some classes, we still do not have books. I would like to bring some excitement back into my Geometry class with a kite-building project. The project would connect math with science while learning about geometric solids, angle measurement, Newton's Laws, and technological design. A kite building kit is available through Pitsco. The kit includes a video and books that can be used for many projects and for years to come. Students will be able to design and build their own kites out of straws and tissue paper that we will actually fly.
I truly believe in allowing a student's imagination to be used in a school environment and encouraging creativity will bring many smiles to their faces. Laughter and fun are things we need more of in our town of destroyed homes and buildings.
