Let's Go Fly A Kite

My students need kite materials to make and fly their own kites.

I'm the science coordinator at an elementary school in a large urban area in Illinois. The school's neighborhood is low income. Over 98% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Despite living in such an exciting city, our students seldom leave the neighborhood, or experience childhood delights such as planting gardens, bike riding or flying a kite. Any events like this are done at school, or not at all. Our 4th grade students take the annual state test every spring, and due to the diligence and commitment above and beyond by the classroom teachers, the science scores have steadily increased. However, in going over the sample questions the classroom teachers and I noticed that one shows a kite and asks the students what can be done to improve its flying ability. Our students have never even seen a kite in action, much less built and flew one to see how to improve it. There are all levels of educational background, money and experience in this state, and the one size fits all test must be taken by all 4th graders.

To give our students an experience they would never get any other way, and to have a little fun with science, we need kite building materials. We have a large vacant lot adjacent to the school where we can fly the kites, and parent helpers to assist with knot tying and taping. Imagine the joy and delight when these brightly decorated birds lift up into the spring time sky!

You could be the source of that joy and delight to a young child. Imagine the impact of this lesson on flight, balance and stability. Learning like that doesn't come from a book. Thanks for thinking of us.
